For two years…
… Christian visited several countries and noted that in developed countries food waste was a serious problem. This awareness of the problem of food waste was the reason that led Chistian to become the CEO of Fairmeals, creating “a great scalable business opportunity for all stakeholders”.
When Fairmeals arrives in Portugal in 2017…
… it aims to reduce food waste in food services by 90%, by introducing a mobile app in the Portuguese market.
Fairmeals’ preciousness…
… is a digital platform, whose use makes it possible to reduce food surpluses in restaurants, reducing its ecological footprint and promoting improvements in its logistics processes. It promotes the consumption of surplus meals by the general consumer, through the dissemination and application of exclusive discounts during non-conventional hours. Therefore, it allows the consumer to have easy access to several products at good prices, while contributing to the reduction of food waste.
In addition to the services provided by the digital app, Fairmeals develops local and academic projects, in order to “promote greater awareness of food waste".
The FairMeals “family" has…
… elements with different experiences and, all of them are crucial for the project.
Christian has been the CEO and founder of the project for 3 years. His professional experience includes entrepreneurship and management, with participation in start-up competitions. Master in Entrepreneurship and Management and with a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems at MIT Portugal, Christian is responsible for the areas related to the project management, such as administration, finance, networking, etc.
Tiago is the CTO and the “brain” who runs the Fairmeals app. He is responsible for all aspects of development. He tries to fit customers’ feedback in the application, so that the improvement of the app is a constant, and always takes into consideration the opinion of its users. Tiago’s professional career has includes programming and development for over ten years, having collaborated with other companies that started as start-ups. Master in Software Engineering and Computer Science, Tiago is CEO / founder of Taggeo, Multiverso and CTO of AirCourts and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
In addition to these two elements, there is a multidisciplinary team that collaborates locally, depending on the country where they are integrated. Its competencies include marketing and sales. The project is under development in countries like Germany, Mexico and Brazil. The intention in Portugal is to cover the entire national territory with the services of Fairmeals.
Fairmeals can also count on the support of consultants and mentors, such as lawyers, financial advisers, professors, among others.
Fairmeals, is considered a project with concerns related to food sustainability, because…
… “is a digital initiative that uses the logic of the circular economy for the distribution of non-commercialized food surpluses."
According to Fairmeals, there is an awareness of food waste by the food services, but…
… don’t know how to deal with their surpluses. Therefore, Fairmeals intends to solve this problem by appealing to the ecological conscience of public and private institutions, through the provision of its services.
In order to contribute to a more sustainable food system, Fairmeals suggests that…
… “there is a need of more information and involvement at government and local level in cities".
