Chestnut…
… is the tree behind the BOM – Best of Mountain project.
Daniela Borges and Vítor Sousa…
… have a special feeling and connection for this tree. According to Daniela “our family members, more specifically our grandparents, were linked to the production of the chestnut."
Chestnut production…
… is located in the DOP area – Serra da Padrela – classified as the area with the best chestnut production of Judia variety. “So, always with a conscience of sustainability, we wanted to promote one of the most important trees in our mountains and often little recognized in our country and all the products it offers to us. All products are 100% organic, because we want to go much further than simply offering the product. We want to intervene for the preservation of our planet and the promotion of healthy diets. ”
“With this project linked to food, we intend to offer the best products from the Portuguese mountains, always organic”.
BOM’s Mission consists of…
… offering the best products from the Portuguese mountains, always organic. It has a special focus on products related to chestnut.
BOM offers different products based on products from the Mountain, such as…
… chestnut honey, fresh chestnuts and granola bites (product made with products from the mountains of Valpaços such as chestnut honey, nuts and olive oil). These products can be found for sale in several organic stores and on the street, as they have an associated street food component, in which the products are taken to the customer by a bicycle, prepared for this purpose. BOM’s bicycle can be found at street, in companies or private events. Its products are also sold on the website: bestofmountain.pt. “We are where you want."
BOM is a sustainable food project because…
… ”all of our products are 100% organic and each ingredient is selected taking into account the health of those who will consume it”. A nutritionist develops all recipes so that we can guarantee that it is the best product that reaches the consumer. The entire range of products is organic, vegetarian and has no refined sugars.
But, when it comes to working with organic products…
… “there are many added costs that will be reflected in the final price and that takes away competitiveness in terms of price and therefore less consumption.”
The organic production, according to Daniela, “is the best and perhaps the only right choice when it comes to a healthy option."
To get around this problem, “our public entities should take more actions to raise awareness on the consumption of this type of product. We feel that more and more the demand increases, but we all have to democratize the “organic” together, getting these products to the largest number of consumers with the reduction of the final price”.
Despite the problems, the national market for organic products is growing…
… although there is still “much to do, as there is a potential for much greater growth".
For international markets, organic certification…
… “is almost seen as something perfectly common and in some markets it is already a condition.”
BOM suggests that in order to raise awareness for food sustainability,…
… in addition to awareness campaigns, it is necessary to inform the general public about how the “big industries” in the food sector work and how food is processed, so that “people could consciously make their choice.”
