… BeKoffee was born! Hector and Maria Nunes are the creators of the brand.
With the help of Professor Fernando Duarte, Hector developed, in the Polymer Department of the University of Minho, the initial research that gave rise to BeKoffee.
Today the project is divided between the city of Guimarães and the Island of Madeira, where Maria lives and dedicates herself full time to it. Hector continues his quest in the investigation of new materials, as a researcher at the University of Minho.
… is a Spin-off from the University of Minho that uses the principles of circular economy, through the revaluation of food waste such as coffee grounds and natural banana and sugar cane fibers. In addition to revaluing food waste, they also reuse synthetic fibers resulting from the textile industry.
By having a diverse range of waste, that is, raw material, they can diversify the characteristics of their products. For this reason, BeKoffee aims, in the near future, to use a greater variety of fibrous residues of natural origin. Do you remember that saying: “Some people’s trash is another’s treasure"?
Coffee grounds remain the raw material of choice for BeKoffee. It is from it that Maria and Hector develop their fashion and decoration articles “fusing an aesthetic relationship, technology, culture and the aroma of coffee”. The development of new products with different designs, using coffee grounds as a raw material is a process that characterizes the brand and which arises from the immense taste that both have for coffee. “Valuing the coffee residue is transforming the aroma, color and texture, into a new material that can be used to create unique and sentimental pieces".
Bekoffee is a circular company…
… that takes advantage of fibrous food waste to give it value again through its use in new products. They avoid the waste of the food industry and substitute the use of less sustainable materials in their products, with the use of more ecological and sustainable materials.
For Bekoffee, more efficient management of agri-food waste is essential for food systems to be more sustainable in the future. The sorting of the different residues is essential so that they can be used to advantage in other sectors, thus creating new circular market niches, both in the food area and outside it.
