Have you ever imagined collecting food from a container?

Anna Masiello is a dumpster diving practitioner, which means she “dives” into the containers where retail food companies, such as supermarkets, discard high amounts of food. She has no monetary need to do this, so the reason why Anna is a dumpster diver is to raise environmental awareness and is a way of fighting against food waste. That’s how the Hero to 0 project came about.

Shall we “dive" a little more into Hero to 0?

Anna…

… is a young italian woman, 26 years old, who lives and studied in Lisbon. Her love for nature led her to complete her Masters in Environment and Sustainability in Lisbon.

Hero to 0 came up…

… even before Anna started practicing dumpster diving, that is, “diving” in supermarket containers.

The project was born in 2017 in order to show Anna’s zero waste path. It started with the aim of alerting to the reduction of waste in general, but, currently, the project has a very strong component in the area of ​​food waste.

Anna’s interest in dumpster diving…

… came about when some of his friends showed her the amount of food they found in a supermarket garbage containers.

The first time Anna practiced dumpster diving…

… was shocked by the amount of food products in good condition that are discarded by commercial surfaces at the end of the day, deciding to share pictures of them on her Instagram account, in order to alert to the big problem that is food waste.

So, Anna started…

… researching on food waste and became even more aware of the reality behind the “full shelves of beautiful and perfect products”. In case the products acquire any aesthetic imperfection, are discarded, ending up even in the trash.

The awareness of this reality was the ignition point of the project. That’s how Anna started sharing content on the topic of food waste and started working on fighting it.

Hero to 0…

… thus intends to raise awareness of the problem of food waste, inspiring people to consume with greater awareness and eventually also intends to collaborate with commercial areas in the food area to reduce food waste.
